The answer to this frequently asked question is a little about you, and a lot about science.
Let’s start with the science!
Every hair on your body grows in a cycle and the hair growth cycle happens in a three stage sequence.
The first stage is called the Anagen Phase or the Growth Stage. New cells form at the root and older cells are pushed upwards to form the hair shaft. This phase only lasts about four weeks for your eyelashes, whereas hair on your scalp can grow for up to six years! The longer the hair, the longer the hair cycle. This is why you commonly see some of your eyelash extensions are grown out half way when you come in for your fill.
Once a hair has reached its full length, it remains in place until the second phase. The Categen phase is the Transition Stage when the hair grows upward and detaches from the blood supply. This means nutrients are no longer being fed to aid in growth and the bulb of the hair begins to shrink and dry out. You lose about 4-6 natural lashes per day.
The final phase is called the Telogen Phase or Resting Phase of the hair. This is when the dry detached hair falls out and then the hair rests before beginning to grow a new hair. This rest can last up to 100 days before you see new hair coming through!
So what does this mean?
Eyelash extensions last about 2-4 weeks depending on your hair cycle.
- Each eyelash you have is in its own cycle meaning there are some lashes in each phase at all times! Even two hairs beside each other can shed at different rates. This is why you can even see lash shedding the day after you get your full set done!
- Only about 40% of your lashes are in the growth stage at any given time. This is why you need to have your lashes filled every few weeks because you're constantly having lashes fall out and new growth!
- Don't panic! When your lashes fall out and your hair does not grow back right away, this is totally normal! Lash extensions do not ruin your natural lashes (if done properly). Your hair could just be in the resting phase.
So now you know how long you can expect your lashes to last based on how your hair cycle works. There are some things you can control when it comes to lash retention:
- If you have oily skin, use blotting paper to keep the oil from building up on your lids during the day.
- If you’re an avid gym goer. You must cleanse your lashes after each workout so sweat oils don’t break down your glue. (P.S. We happen to know where to get an amazing rose water lash cleanser!)
- If you spend lots of time in the sauna or at hot yoga, keep in mind this causes the lash glue to expand and harden again which does effect their staying power. Try going to a cool room yoga or avoid saunas when you have lashes on!
- Time of year: Changing seasons can cause shedding. (We will get into this topic in an upcoming blog)
- This is a hard one. If you sleep on your face, you need to train yourself to sleep on your back. Use a pillow or make a triangle with one of your legs to keep you from rolling on your stomach. Sleeping on your lashes causes premature fall out and sometimes lash breakage.
- If you wear a lot of makeup, especially liquid eyeliner, you can expect your lashes will fall off much faster than if you went fresh faced. Liners and mascaras have many chemicals in them that break down the lash glue. Avoid wearing it unless you have a special occasion!
