Keeping with the theme of answering questions from my clients, let's talk about peptides and antioxidants today!
I have noticed many of my clients know when their skincare ingredients include peptides and antioxidants (usually the packaging says so), but they don't always know what these ingredients do! I thought I would share some info on some of my favourite cosmetic ingredients!
First up, Peptides! Peptides are chains of amino acids used in skincare to help aging skin by improving tissue repair, cell renewal and stimulation of fibroblast activity (the cells that produce collagen). Peptides can be made using different chains of amino acids that help make big changes in your skin. You would use a peptide rich product if you want to see collagen renewal (fullness), elasticity improvements (tight looking skin), and firmness restored to your skin. Peptide ingredients are more often than not mixed in with hydrating products and antioxidants.
Some names for peptides include: Pentapeptide, Oligopeptide, Tetrapeptide,
Antioxidants are vitamins, amino acids, and other natural substances with the ability to neutralize free-radicals before they damage your skin cells.Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions that have unpaired electrons. The can be found in the air we breath, the food we eat and pretty much anything we come into contact with. These unpaired electrons are reactive with the skin. They damage your cell membrane and destroy the cells causing premature aging. When it comes to skincare, antioxidants are able to interfere with inflammation caused by free-radicals and reduce the production of enzymes that injure and destroy skin cells. Stopping the damage before it's done is an essential anti-aging secret!
The skin needs antioxidants topically (through skincare) and orally (through food) to help with sun damage and aging. Vitamin A, C and E in your products or in food are a great anti-aging defense!
